Book Reviews
I love this book! The story brought me back to the good times I had growing up at Jewish delis in Brooklyn, even though this took place in Chicago. Jewish delis are the same everywhere, where families celebrate holidays and life events. Gracie, the talking angel dog, is funny and mischievous as she attempts to bring love into Adam’s life, the son of Zach, the deli owner.
Adam thought he had found love with Gabriella in New York, who is a society snob. While Molly lives with Phillip, she knows she isn’t in love. Gracie and Zach scheme to bring them together when Adam visits Chicago. Gracie’s plan has a few twists and turns, but love always wins in the end.
If you’re looking for a comforting, quick read, perfect for enjoying a weekend with a good cup of coffee, Marsha Casper Cook’s *Dinner at the Deli* is the ideal choice. This charming story transports us to the heart of a traditional Chicago deli during Thanksgiving, becoming the perfect setting to talk about family, unexpected love, and the magic that only our four-legged companions can bring to our lives. With its fluid narrative, it’s a book that captivates both men and women alike. It leaves us with an inspiring message about the importance of community, the rediscovery of family bonds, and the certainty that it’s never too late to open your heart and give yourself a second chance at happiness. A sweet, quick, and deeply comforting read that will leave you with a smile on your face and eager to discover more of the author’s work.
As a reader, I am a sucker for anything told through the perspective of a four-legged creature, and Gracie is an animal who completely entranced me. The Chicago deli setting at Thanksgiving is a beautifully warm setting and a wonderful place for closure, reconciliation, and love to begin again. While the tone might appear overly sentimental, it still has a comforting feeling rather than an overwhelming, “sugarcoated” feeling. The soft nudged of this “angel” from Heaven encourage everyone in attendance to reach out to each other and connect on a deeper level. This story is short, but filled with a heavy dose of love, making it a perfect choice for readers who are looking for a heartwarming book during stressful times but who still want to support the value of family and a fresh beginning.
This story hit different. Dinner at the Deli is a beautiful narrative that centers love, growth, and healing—something we all need. Gracie the dog, who is more like a spiritual guide than just a pet, reminds us how often animals help us navigate our human mess. The relationship between Zach and his grandson Adam is complex, and watching them rebuild that bond was moving. It’s about forgiveness, love, and second chances—not just for the humans, but for all of us trying to overcome our pasts. What I loved most was how it didn’t just focus on romance—it was about family, acceptance, and breaking down walls. If you need a feel-good read that challenges you to think deeply about your relationships, this is it.
Dining at the Deli is a joyful celebration of classic comfort food and the culture that surrounds it.
Comforting, flavorful, and downright fun
It doesn’t try to be fancy, and that’s exactly why it works.
